Focus on yourself
We’re constantly made aware of how others live their lives.
This was, at one point, largely limited to outside of the home.
Social functions.
Running errands.
We just weren’t really exposed to other people and lifestyles that much.
Now, with the internet, social media, and the 24/7 news cycle, this isn’t the case.
We see so much more about how other people live.
In some ways, this is quite pleasant.
We can connect and interact with others like ourselves.
In other ways, it’s quite unpleasant.
We’re exposed to people and ideas we don’t understand.
Lifestyles and perspectives that challenge our own.
We might feel threatened by this.
We might feel as though our way of life is superior.
We might feel jealousy or envy.
So we criticize.
We put others down for how they live their lives.
It’s different than ours, and that makes us uncomfortable.
So we make them feel uncomfortable.
We might do this openly.
Throwing insults and derogatory terms.
Demonstrating passive aggression.
Deliberately attempting to make them feel bad.
Other times it’s more subtle.
We simply keep questioning.
Asking “why?”
When no answer will satisfy us.
We simply disagree with them.
So we keep prodding.
With no intention of seeking a common understanding.
What good does this accomplish?
What purpose does this serve?
We only have so much time and so much energy.
How much time and energy do you spend criticizing?
Others’ jobs?
Appearance?
Romantic partners?
Political views?
Spirituality?
How does this move you closer to your best life?
What if this time and energy were spent on yourself?
Improving yourself?
Focus on yourself.
What about yourself do you not like?
What about your own life do you not understand?
What about your own circumstances would you like to change?
Start there.
It won’t be easy.
It will be uncomfortable.
It will, however, be worth it.
You are worth it.
You’ve got this.
