This bite

There’s knowing what to do.

There’s doing it.

Then there’s doing it consistently.

That last one can be a real freaking toughie, especially when making a change to our eating habits.

The self-imposed pressure for perfection.

The idea of keeping it up for weeks, months, or years hanging over your head.

What if we miss our favorite foods?

What if we don’t know what to buy or where to buy it?

What if we run out of cooking ideas?

What if we screw up a meal?

What if we miss a day?

What if we have an off week?

What if we get impatient?

All of these thoughts of self-doubt and pressure lead us to not even start.

The idea of making a permanent change is overwhelming.

Start by forgetting about “permanent”.

Nothing is permanent.

If this change isn’t what you thought, let it go.

Try something else.

Next, forget about perfection.

That doesn’t exist.

You’ll always have “off” days.

They’re just days.

Days that you did something different.

Finally, don’t think about the long term.

The time will pass, no matter what.

Tomorrow will come, no matter what.

Yesterday will disappear, no matter what.

No matter what, all you can focus on is today.

This moment.

So, don’t worry about anything else.

To be consistent for a year, a month, or even a week.

Start with today.

With this meal.

Independent of the previous bite.

Because right now, only this bite matters.

Right now, only this bite moves you toward your best life.

The only meal you can ever control is the next one.

So, focus on that.

If you do that, repeatedly, the time will pass.

The meals will add up.

The days will string together.

Then the weeks.

You’ll be taking one step after another toward a most excellent life.

Toward living like you love yourself.

Even with all the small deviations sprinkled throughout.

The wins add up.

You are worthy of that.

You’ve got this.
