You use your device, it doesn’t use you

Have you ever glanced down at your phone to check something really quick, then before you know it, an hour has passed?

Or felt as if there’s always a buzz, beep, or blink calling for you to check some app?

As if the device that was meant to make your life easier, to give you more time, has done anything but?

You’re not the only one.

So many of us feel this way.

Tethered to our smartphones.

Our tablets.

Some of us even feel this to the point of resentment.

As if we’re the victims.

As if it’s our devices that are to blame.

Yet you are not powerless to your device.

You are in charge.

You can make the change.

Reclaiming your time and attention can be hard.

Make things easier on yourself.

“Mute posts and stories”

“Turn off notifications”

“Do not disturb”

“Unfollow”

Keep asking, “Does this serve me?”

One page, person, or group at a time.

You use your device, it doesn’t use you.

You don’t have to make this change overnight.

Small steps add up.

As you’re called to check less frequently, you’ll find you actually want to check less frequently.

The process gets easier and easier.

Sure, you might still get sucked in every now and then.

That’s okay.

There is no prize for perfection.

Only progress matters.

And you’re the judge of what’s acceptable and what’s not.

So be kind to yourself.

You’re doing the work.

You’re putting yourself first.

You will misstep.

That’s just a part of the process.

You’re going to do great.

You’ve got this.
